Lessons Learned and Forgotten

I’ve been looking at old slides lately, thinking about the differences in taking photos 15 yrs ago compared with today, and I came upon this session from 1998. Shot with my Nikon FM2 and 35mm f2,8 lens on 100 ASA

Mike’s Octopodi

I have been discussing charcoal with my friend and tennis buddy Mike for some time, in particular octopus, which I have not cooked on charcoal. Yesterday when Mike’s and my teams played each other he hosted a post-match barbie, and I was

Single Light Food Photography

I used to do quite a bit of food photography, almost all of it shot with natural light. This was because I was shooting for a magazine and I’d be doing shots in restaurants during the day. It was

I was digitising this Fujichrome Velvia from 1995 I was digitising this Fujichrome Velvia from 1995 over the weekend and it made me think about the relationship between aesthetics and necessity. There is an aesthetic to the shots that I like, even though technically there's a lot lost in the blacks and they're not sharp due to motion blur, etc. So I wonder if what we call a film aesthetic is really just a collective nostalgic response to the limitations of what the medium gave us. I don't think there's a yes or no answer to this. It's more of a conversation but I find it very interesting.

What’s Next for Team Dave?

In 2025 I'm working on a book based around a month I spent in Venice in 1995, as well as looking at new ways of rendering my ongoing low light seascape works.

In 2024 I began to develop ideas for some new work, which was exhibited in the Newmarch Gallery in May 2025.

2023 was mainly directed to working towards a solo show in August. This show formed part of the SALA (South Australian Living Artists) Festival and was held in Adelaide. It brought with it many wonderful things and made me very tired. I am now trying to recharge after three very challenging years. (Challenging, that is, by my standards.) I'm still working on a couple of series in 2024 though, and we'll see how that goes.

2021-22 saw the completion of a Masters Degree in Contemporary Art at UniSA. This was a return to full time study for the first time since 1984.
